Kakamega is the headquarters of Kakamega County in Kenya, near the border with Uganda and close to Lake Victoria. It runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3, year-round, the same as Nairobi and all of Kenya. No daylight saving.

Kakamega Forest

Kakamega Forest is Kenya’s only tropical rainforest[4], a remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once spanned across equatorial Africa[4]. The forest hosts 367 recorded bird species, primates including blue and redtail monkeys, and 380 plant species — drawing researchers and ecotourism visitors.

The forest also has its own seasonal time signals. Bird calls change with the season. Fruiting trees attract animals in predictable cycles. The local Luhya people have traditional knowledge of these natural calendars that predates any civil timezone.

The Luhya market calendar

The Luhya people of western Kenya traditionally organized economic life around market cycles. Different villages held weekly markets on rotating days, creating a regional market calendar that structured the week. These markets continue today, and the market schedule still organizes movement and commerce in the region.
