On May 5, 1862, Mexican forces under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated a French army of around 5,730 troops outside Puebla with a defensive force of 3,791.[3] The battle did not end the French intervention, but it slowed it — French forces retreated to Orizaba to await reinforcements — and it became a point of civic pride that Puebla carries to this day.[3] The date, Cinco de Mayo, is celebrated more intensely in Puebla than anywhere else, including the US, where it has been adopted with different cultural weight.
