Trujillo sits on Peru’s northern coast, in the desert that runs along the Pacific between the Andes and the ocean. It is one of South America’s oldest Spanish colonial cities, founded 1534, and it sits adjacent to Chan Chan, the largest pre-Columbian city in South America and former capital of the Chimú Empire.

Moche temples near the city

Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, the Temples of the Sun and Moon built by the Moche civilization (c. 100–800 CE),[4] stand a few kilometers from the city center. The pyramids are among the largest adobe structures in the Americas and remain an active archaeological site.
