Ürümqi officially follows China Standard Time (CST/UTC+8), though local Uyghur communities often observe informal UTC+6, two hours behind Beijing.

Ürümqi sits at 43 degrees north in the heart of Central Asia, about 3,700 kilometers from China’s eastern coast. It is one of the most inland cities on Earth, and the geographic distance from Beijing’s longitude is enormous: roughly 29 degrees of longitude, equivalent to nearly two hours of solar time.

China officially uses a single national timezone, China Standard Time at UTC+8. All Chinese clocks, from Beijing to Ürümqi, show the same time by law. The consequence in Ürümqi is stark: on China Standard Time, sunrise in midwinter arrives after 10am, and summer nights don’t darken until close to midnight.

In practice, Xinjiang operates on an unofficial dual-clock system. Han Chinese institutions, government offices, and businesses often run on Beijing time. Uyghur communities and many local businesses use “Xinjiang Time,” UTC+6, which is what the IANA database records as Asia/Urumqi. The two-hour gap between the official and practical clocks is a quiet assertion of cultural identity, and the question of which clock someone uses carries social and political weight.

At approximately 2,500 kilometers from the nearest coastline, Ürümqi holds a Guinness Book of Records citation as the most remote city from any sea in the world.[2] Climate is extreme: hot dry summers, bitterly cold winters.
