Marc Chagall was born near Vitebsk in 1887 — in the nearby village of Lyozna — and grew up in the city, which has made this central to its identity.[3] The Chagall Museum and art center keeps his memory alive, and the annual Slavianski Bazaar music festival draws visitors from across the region each summer, briefly making this northern Belarus city one of the most lively in the region.
