Ahmedabad was once known as the Manchester of India for its cotton mills. The old mill district along the eastern bank of the Sabarmati still carries the industrial architecture of that era, though most mills have closed or been converted. The city’s commercial rhythm now runs on IT, pharmaceuticals, and trade, with business hours typically stretching from 10am to 7pm.

The morning markets along Manek Chowk open early, by 6am, and the same square transforms into a street food destination after 9pm. The city’s relationship with time is shaped by heat as much as commerce. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 42 degrees Celsius, pushing outdoor activity into the early morning and late evening. The midday hours are for staying indoors.

Ahmedabad is also where Mahatma Gandhi established his Sabarmati Ashram in 1917, from which he launched the Salt March in 1930. The ashram still operates on the riverbank, open daily from 8:30am to 6:30pm IST.
