Johannesburg is Africa’s largest city by some measures and South Africa’s economic powerhouse. It runs on South Africa Standard Time, UTC+2, year-round. South Africa observed daylight saving last in 1944 and has not returned to it since.

At UTC+2 and 26.2 degrees South latitude, Johannesburg’s solar noon falls at about 12:10pm, a near-perfect alignment. The city’s high altitude, about 1,750 meters, gives it a mild climate despite its position in the subtropics.

The gold rush and industrial time

Johannesburg was founded in 1886 when gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand. The city grew from nothing to a major industrial center within a decade. Mining imposed the most rigorous time discipline of the industrial era: shift changes in underground mines required precise coordination. Workers went down and came up on schedules that the clock governed absolutely.

The mining calendar still marks the city’s rhythm in parts of Soweto and the East Rand, where mining employment shaped generations of families.

Africa’s financial hub

Johannesburg Stock Exchange is Africa’s largest, and the Sandton CBD houses the regional offices of multinational corporations. Financial services require careful timezone management: JSE opens at 9am SAST, when London is at 7am in winter and 8am in summer. The afternoon overlap with Europe, from about 10am to 2pm JSE time, is when most international financial activity occurs.
