Jakarta is Indonesia’s capital and largest city, the economic engine of Southeast Asia’s largest economy. It runs on Western Indonesia Time (WIB), UTC+7, year-round. No daylight saving.

Indonesia uses three timezones across its vast archipelago: WIB (UTC+7) for the western islands including Java and Sumatra; WITA (UTC+8) for the central islands including Bali and Kalimantan; and WIT (UTC+9) for the eastern islands including Papua and Maluku. Jakarta uses the westernmost standard.

A city that begins before dawn

Jakarta is notorious for its traffic. The city’s twelve million official residents, and potentially twice as many in the greater metropolitan area, have adapted to this by starting the day very early. Markets begin at 4am. Many office workers leave before 6am to beat the traffic. The commute culture has pushed the effective start of the Jakarta workday earlier than any clock regulation requires.

The five daily prayers, observed by Jakarta’s predominantly Muslim population, also structure the day: Fajr before dawn, Dhuhr at noon, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset, Isha after dark.

The VOC and colonial time

The Dutch East India Company (VOC) established Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1619 as its Asian headquarters. The company’s global trading operations required precise time coordination across Amsterdam, the Cape of Good Hope, India, and the Indonesian archipelago. Batavia’s port ran on a commercial schedule synchronized with the company’s shipping routes.
