Delhi, India’s capital and second-largest metropolitan area, runs on Indian Standard Time, UTC+5:30, year-round. The IANA identifier Asia/Kolkata covers the entire country. India has used a single timezone since 1947, a political choice that prioritizes national unity over geographic precision, and it has never observed daylight saving time.

The half-hour offset is a deliberate middle compromise. India spans from roughly 68 to 97 degrees east longitude, a range that would theoretically justify two or three timezones. UTC+5:30 sits between what western India and eastern India would use if split. Delhi at 77 degrees east is reasonably served by this offset: solar noon arrives around 12:25pm in December, close to clock noon.

The northeast’s argument for a second timezone

Northeastern India is the most daylight-disadvantaged. In Assam and Arunachal Pradesh (nearly 95 degrees east), solar noon arrives around 11:20am, meaning clocks run about 40 minutes slow. These states have periodically advocated for a separate northeastern timezone, and the issue resurfaces in political discussions. Delhi, at the geographic and political center, has resisted any change that would divide the national clock.
