São Paulo is the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere, a sprawling megalopolis of over 22 million in the metropolitan area. It runs on Brasília Time, which is UTC-3. Brazil abolished daylight saving time in 2019, ending a seasonal practice that had applied to the southern states (including São Paulo) for decades.

The DST abolition was controversial. São Paulo sits at 23 degrees south, far enough from the equator that there is meaningful daylight variation: about 14 hours in December (summer) versus about 10.5 hours in June. The argument for DST was energy savings in a country with hydroelectric-dependent power. The argument against was complexity: Brazil’s enormous north-south extent meant some states observed DST while others did not, creating internal timezone confusion.

Since 2019, São Paulo has stayed at UTC-3 year-round. The city’s relationship with time has never been purely about the clock anyway. Traffic here operates on its own logic: rush hour can mean anything from 7am to 10pm, and the city’s famous gridlock has been cited as equivalent to hours of lost productivity daily. The fixed timezone simplified at least one dimension of this chaos.

the stock exchange and New York alignment

São Paulo is also a major financial center, and the BM&F Bovespa stock exchange’s operating hours synchronized with New York markets matter intensely. UTC-3 puts São Paulo two hours ahead of New York during US Eastern Standard Time, one hour ahead during EDT.
