Beijing is in the Asia/Shanghai timezone (CST/UTC+8). China uses a single timezone for the entire country, a political decision made when the People’s Republic unified five solar zones in 1949.
China spans roughly 62 degrees of longitude, from the Pamir Mountains in the west to the Pacific coast in the east. By conventional timezone logic, this should encompass five separate time zones. Instead, the People’s Republic of China uses one: UTC+8, Beijing Time, for everything. The IANA identifier is Asia/Shanghai.
Before 1949, China used five timezones. The new People’s Republic unified them on October 1, 1949, as a statement of national unity. The clock became politics.
One clock, five solar zones
The practical consequences are extreme. In the Xinjiang region in the far west, where Aqsu is located, official UTC+8 means sunrise in winter at nearly 10am and sunset past 8pm. Most people there run on informal “Xinjiang Time” (UTC+6), which creates a de facto two-clock society. In Beijing itself, at 116 degrees east, the fit is reasonable: UTC+8 is solar noon within an hour or so.
The IANA database uses Asia/Shanghai as the identifier rather than Asia/Beijing, for historical reasons related to which city’s timezone records were more complete when the database was established.
China does not observe daylight saving time, another policy it has not changed since 1991 when DST was abolished. The single clock, no adjustments, year-round.
