Bratsk is a Soviet-era industrial city in Irkutsk Oblast, Siberia, sitting on the Angara River in the vast taiga forest. It runs on Asia/Irkutsk: UTC+8, year-round. Russia abolished seasonal clock changes in 2014 and has stayed on fixed time since.
Bratsk exists because of the Bratsk Hydroelectric Station, one of the worldβs largest when it was completed in 1967. The dam on the Angara created the Bratsk Reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. The city was built to house the dam workers and the workers of the aluminum smelter and pulp mill that the damβs power supplies.
Siberian light at 56 degrees north
Bratsk sits at 56 degrees north latitude. The seasonal light variation is extreme. In June, the sun sets past 10:30pm local time, and summer nights are barely dark. In December, daylight lasts only about six hours. The city built itself into the frozen forest and learned to live with this cycle.
Soviet construction projects like the Bratsk dam required round-the-clock work shifts that operated regardless of light or darkness. The workers who built the dam and city came from across the Soviet Union and operated on industrially imposed schedules rather than solar ones. This tradition continues in the aluminum and industrial plants that still operate here.
The Baikal-Amur Mainline
Bratsk is one of the cities along the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM), the railway line that cuts through Siberia north of Lake Baikal and was one of the Soviet Unionβs most ambitious infrastructure projects. Station clocks along the BAM, like all Russian railways, show Moscow time alongside local time, a duality of temporal reference that residents navigate daily.
The time difference between Bratsk and London is eight hours in winter, seven in summer when the UK observes BST. Irkutsk is on the same clock.
