Shanghai is China’s financial center and largest city, a metropolis of over 24 million people on the Yangtze River delta. It runs on China Standard Time (UTC+8), the single timezone that applies across all of China, from the eastern coast to the far western border with Tajikistan.

The decision to maintain a single national timezone was made after the People’s Republic of China’s founding in 1949. Before that, China had five time zones. The unification was an act of political coherence, declaring that the nation operated as one, regardless of geography.
