Convert time from Casey
Casey Station is one of Australiaβs three Antarctic research stations, situated on the Budd Coast of Wilkes Land in East Antarctica. It runs on Antarctica/Casey: UTC+8, the same timezone as Perth, Western Australia. This choice aligns Caseyβs operations with the Australian supply and communication base in Hobart, making scheduling easier despite the 2,800-kilometer distance.
Casey operates at approximately 66 degrees south latitude, just inside the Antarctic Circle. The light environment here is extreme in a way that makes conventional clock time feel almost theoretical.
The extreme light cycle
In summer (December), Casey experiences near-continuous daylight. The sun traces a low circle around the horizon without fully setting for weeks. In winter (June and July), the reverse: complete darkness, with the sun not rising above the horizon for approximately a month. The Antarctic winter night lasts from late May through mid-July.
In this environment, the clock is primarily a scheduling tool, not a guide to light. Researchers keep whatever schedule makes sense for their work and for maintaining contact with colleagues in Australia. The UTC+8 alignment with Perth means that when itβs 9am in Casey, itβs 9am in Perth: supply logistics, satellite communications, and coordination all benefit from this synchronization.
Antarctic sovereignty and time
Antarctica is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System (1959), which freezes territorial claims. Australia claims the Australian Antarctic Territory, which includes Casey Stationβs location. The timezone choice of UTC+8 implicitly reinforces the Australian administrative relationship with the territory.
Other Antarctic stations use the timezone of their home country or of the nearest resupply port. Chatham in New Zealand uses its own offset. Casey uses Perth time.
The time difference between Casey and London is eight hours in winter, seven when the UK observes BST.
