In summer (December), Casey experiences near-continuous daylight. The sun traces a low circle around the horizon without fully setting for weeks. In winter (June and July), the reverse: complete darkness, with the sun not rising above the horizon for approximately a month. The Antarctic winter night lasts from late May through mid-July.
In this environment, the clock is primarily a scheduling tool, not a guide to light. Researchers keep whatever schedule makes sense for their work and for maintaining contact with colleagues in Australia. The UTC+8 alignment with Perth means that when it’s 9am in Casey, it’s 9am in Perth: supply logistics, satellite communications, and coordination all benefit from this synchronization.
Antarctic sovereignty and time
Antarctica is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System (1959), which freezes territorial claims. Australia claims the Australian Antarctic Territory, which includes Casey Station’s location.
