Aqsu is an oasis city in western China’s Xinjiang region, sitting at the northern edge of the Taklimakan Desert on what was once the northern route of the Silk Road. It is a city of Uyghur majority population, cotton fields, and ancient trade routes, now part of a region under significant political pressure.

China officially uses a single timezone across its entire vast territory: Beijing Time, UTC+8. Restaurants open “late” by Beijing reckoning because lunch at noon Beijing Time means eating at 10am local solar time.

Beijing officially shares the same UTC+8 clock, but the lived experience of time is completely different.
