Cần Thơ is the largest city in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and the region’s commercial capital. It runs on Asia/Ho_Chi_Minh: UTC+7, Indochina Time, year-round. Vietnam uses a single timezone across the entire country, and no daylight saving time is observed.

The city sits where the Cần Thơ River meets a major branch of the Mekong, about 170 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. At 10 degrees north latitude, it has near-constant tropical daylight: sunrise around 5:30am, sunset around 6pm, varying only slightly through the year.

Tidal schedules and the floating market

In the Mekong Delta, the practical clock is partly the tide table. The river system connecting the delta’s waterways is influenced by tidal flows from the South China Sea. The famous Cái Răng floating market, where boats loaded with fruit and vegetables convene on the water, starts before dawn, around 5am to 6am, and winds down by mid-morning. The timing is driven by both tidal flows and the social convention that fresh goods should be traded early.

These floating markets are not traditional craft displays for tourists, though they attract visitors. They are functioning wholesale markets where smaller vendors buy produce from larger boats to sell in local markets through the day.

Rice and the Delta calendar

The Mekong Delta produces more than half of Vietnam’s rice. The rice planting and harvest calendar determines the most important rhythms of delta life. Three rice crops per year are achievable in the delta’s warm climate. The timing of planting, flooding, and harvest follows agricultural science and water management schedules more than any clock.
