Saigon time and the war

During the Vietnam War, the American military operated in Vietnam on its own schedule: operations were planned against Zulu time (UTC), local briefings used “local time” (UTC+7), and coordination with Washington required a 12-hour offset. The fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 happened at 10:24am local time, which was 11:24pm April 29 in Washington. The timezone gap made the live news cycle complicated for American television audiences.

The motorbike city at dawn

Ho Chi Minh City’s morning rush begins before 6am. The streets fill with motorbikes, food vendors set up before sunrise, and the wholesale markets in Binh Tay operate through the night. This is a genuinely early city: by 7am, the day is already well underway, partly because of the tropical heat that makes early morning the most productive time.
