Blantyre is Malawi’s largest city and its commercial and industrial hub, sitting in the southern highlands near the border with Mozambique. It runs on Africa/Blantyre: UTC+2, Central Africa Time, year-round. No daylight saving time is observed.

Named after Scotland

Blantyre was founded in 1876 by Scottish missionaries from the Church of Scotland’s Blantyre Mission. They named it after Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, the Scottish birthplace of David Livingstone, the explorer and missionary whose travels through central Africa in the mid-nineteenth century opened the region to European awareness. The Scottish connection is still visible: St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, built in the 1890s by mission workers largely without professional architectural supervision, stands as one of southern Africa’s finest examples of Scottish Gothic architecture in brick.

The city grew rapidly during the colonial period and remains the economic engine of Malawi even though Lilongwe, 300 kilometers north, replaced it as the capital after independence.

Highland climate and light

At 1,040 meters elevation, Blantyre has a moderate subtropical highland climate. At roughly 16 degrees south latitude, daylight varies meaningfully through the year. June and July, the dry winter months, see sunrise around 6am and sunset around 5:30pm, with cool, clear days. December and January are hot and rainy, with longer daylight reaching past 6pm.

The time difference between Blantyre and London is two hours in winter, one in summer when the UK observes BST.
