Cape Town is the southwestern anchor of Africa. Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape in 1488. The Dutch East India Company established a refreshment station here in 1652, beginning European settlement.
The Cape’s position at the confluence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans gave it strategic importance for maritime navigation. Ships rounding the Cape needed to synchronize their chronometers after the long South Atlantic crossing. Observatory, one of Cape Town’s suburbs, is named after the Royal Observatory established there in 1820 specifically to provide accurate time signals to ships entering Table Bay.

Cape Town’s seasons are inverted from the Northern Hemisphere. December to February is the hot, dry summer. July to September is the cool, wet winter. The long December evenings, with sunset after 8pm, fill the V&A Waterfront, Clifton Beach, and the Atlantic Seaboard promenades. This is the high season for Cape Town tourism, when the city is most alive.
