Chitungwiza is Zimbabwe’s third-largest city, a high-density urban area about 30 kilometers southeast of Harare. It runs on Africa/Harare: UTC+2, Central Africa Time, year-round. Zimbabwe does not observe daylight saving time.

Chitungwiza was built as a planned workers’ city during the Rhodesian era, designed to house the Black African workforce that Harare’s (then Salisbury’s) racially segregated policies kept out of the city proper. It was one of the largest planned townships in southern Africa when developed in the 1970s and 1980s.

A city without a city center

Chitungwiza was planned for housing, not commerce. The city’s layout reflects its origins as a dormitory suburb: residential density is high, but retail, entertainment, and civic infrastructure were developed minimally and have never caught up with the population. Residents commute to Harare for most economic activity. The daily rhythm of Chitungwiza is shaped by bus and combi (minibus) schedules into the capital.

Post-independence growth

Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980 brought formal rights but also rapid population growth into Chitungwiza. Economic crises in the 2000s and the hyperinflation period accelerated informalization of the economy. Street vending, informal markets, and home-based enterprises became the economic fabric of daily life. These activities operate on their own pragmatic schedules.

At 18 degrees south, Chitungwiza has moderate seasonal daylight variation on the Zimbabwean highveld. Sunrise falls between 5:30am and 6:30am. Winters are cool and dry; summers warm and wet.

The time difference between Chitungwiza and London is two hours in winter, one in summer when the UK observes BST. Bulawayo and Harare are on the same clock.
