Ankara is in the Europe/Istanbul timezone (TRT/UTC+3), with no daylight saving since 2016. Turkey’s capital has a population of around 5.5 million.

Turkey made an unusual decision in 2016: it advanced its clocks by one hour for daylight saving time as usual, then never moved them back. Permanently. Turkey is now on UTC+3 year-round, meaning it keeps summer time as its standard time. The IANA identifier is Europe/Istanbul, used for all of Turkey including the capital Ankara.

The decision was controversial. In winter months, this means sunrise in Ankara can come as late as 8:30am. Critics argued this was disruptive to morning school schedules and workers who start early. Supporters argued the extra evening light was more economically valuable.

Ankara sits at 39 degrees north, about the same latitude as Lisbon or Beijing. In December, solar noon here falls around 1:15pm on the clock, evidence of how far the official time has been pushed ahead of the sun.
