Annaba sits in the far northeast corner of Algeria, close to the Tunisian border, on a bay of the Mediterranean. It is Algeria’s second port and fourth-largest city, with a heavy industrial base in steel production centered on the El Hadjar steel complex. The city has ancient roots as the Roman city of Hippo Regius, where Saint Augustine served as bishop and wrote many of his major theological works.

Annaba’s geography puts it in an interesting timezone position. It sits at roughly 8.4 degrees east longitude, which is actually further east than most of Europe’s Central European Time zone. Yet it uses UTC+1 rather than UTC+2. Neighboring Tunisia, just to the east, also uses UTC+1. The timezone boundary cuts in the other direction: Libya, to Tunisia’s east, uses UTC+2.

Mediterranean summers, ancient foundations

The city’s Mediterranean position means it has a climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This seasonal swing is more pronounced than in southern Algeria but less extreme than in the Sahara. Summer evenings are active: the port, the cafe strips, the long Mediterranean twilight.

Algiers is about 600 kilometers to the west, sharing the same timezone. 9am in Annaba is 8am in London during European winter.
