The city was developed by Norwegian missionaries in the late 19th century who valued its cool highland climate, eventually building a sanatorium to take advantage of the thermal mineral springs nearby. That spa-town origin is still visible in some of the colonial architecture.

Antsirabe is famous for its pousse-pousse, the decorated two-wheeled rickshaws pulled by runners that serve as the city’s distinctive taxi service. The rhythm of the streets here is punctuated by the calls of pousse-pousse drivers, the morning market crowds, and the afternoon slowdown during the cool winter dry season.

The city is also an industrial center for Madagascar, with food processing, textile production, and small manufacturing. Beer brewing is significant: the national beer, THB (Three Horses Beer), is brewed here.

The highland cool and high elevation mean the mornings are often cold by Malagasy standards. Work starts after the chill lifts and slows again as evening cool descends.
