Athens is in the Europe/Athens timezone (EET/UTC+2, EEST/UTC+3 in summer). Greece follows the EU daylight saving schedule, and the city has counted hours since ancient water clocks measured court speeches.

Athens has been keeping time for a very long time. The ancient Greeks developed some of the earliest mechanical water clocks, the clepsydra, for measuring speeches in court and tracking astronomical events. The Tower of the Winds, built around 50 BCE in the Roman Agora, is one of antiquity’s most remarkable timekeeping structures: a marble octagonal tower with sundials on each face and a water clock inside.

The modern clock is Eastern European Time, UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 during daylight saving. The IANA identifier is Europe/Athens. Greece follows the EU’s DST schedule.

Athens shares its timezone with Amman, Beirut, and Cairo in winter, creating a timezone band across the eastern Mediterranean. In summer, Turkey adds itself to the UTC+3 group, as Ankara uses permanent UTC+3.

Late lunches, late nights

The city’s daily rhythm is famously shifted later than northern European standards. Lunch happens from 2pm to 4pm. Dinner rarely starts before 9pm. Evenings extend long into the night, especially in summer when the Acropolis and surrounding neighborhoods fill with tourists and locals alike.

Greece’s position in the EU means it participates in discussions about potentially ending seasonal time changes. Given Athens’ relatively southern latitude (37.9 degrees north), the arguments for DST are weaker than for northern members of the union.
