The city of consuls
During the late Ottoman period, Bitola, then known as Monastir, was one of the most diplomatically active cities in the Balkans. The Ottoman Empireβs administrative structure made it the capital of the Monastir Vilayet, a regional government unit covering a large part of the western Balkans. European powers posted consulates here to monitor Ottoman affairs and protect their commercial interests.
At its peak in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bitola hosted over twenty consulates. The elegant consulate buildings along the Shirok Sokak (Broad Street) are still standing, giving the city a cosmopolitan architectural character unusual for a city its size. Mustafa Kemal AtatΓΌrk, who would later found modern Turkey, attended military school in Bitola in the 1890s. There is a museum dedicated to him in the city.
Post-Ottoman continuity
When the Balkan Wars ended Ottoman rule in 1912, Bitola became part of Serbia and then Yugoslavia. The consulates closed. The cityβs strategic importance diminished. But the physical legacy of that diplomatic era remains visible in every baroque and art nouveau building on the main street.
The time conversion from Bitola to London is one hour ahead in winter. Skopje shares the same clock.
