Burnaby is a city directly east of Vancouver in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. It runs on America/Vancouver: UTC-8 in winter (Pacific Standard Time), UTC-7 in summer (Pacific Daylight Time). DST follows the standard North American schedule: spring forward in March, fall back in November.

British Columbia has repeatedly discussed abolishing DST. The province has passed legislation authorizing the switch to permanent Pacific Daylight Time (UTC-7 year-round), contingent on Washington State and Oregon making the same move. As of 2026, that coordination has not produced a synchronized change. Burnaby and BC continue to observe biannual clock changes.

Simon Fraser University and the mountain clock

Simon Fraser University sits on Burnaby Mountain at 370 meters elevation, and it genuinely has a different light environment from the city below. The mountain frequently sits above the cloud layer when the Lower Mainland is overcast, and its summit location means slightly earlier sunrises and later sunsets than the valley floor. The university campus was designed with this elevated position in mind, with broad terraces and views across the Georgia Strait to Vancouver Island.

At 49 degrees north, Burnaby has dramatic seasonal daylight variation. June sunsets arrive after 9:30pm. December mornings don’t get light until after 8am. The long summer evenings are a cultural touchstone in Metro Vancouver: outdoor events, evening runs along the trails of Burnaby Mountain, and late-night patios all depend on this light.

Burnaby, Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, and the other municipalities of Metro Vancouver all use America/Vancouver. The region functions as a single urban system. Commutes flow across municipal boundaries and the clock does not change.

The time conversion from Burnaby to London puts London eight hours ahead in winter, seven in summer. Vancouver is on the same clock.
