Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire and remains one of Turkey’s most historically significant cities. It runs on Europe/Istanbul: UTC+3, year-round. Turkey abolished daylight saving time in 2016, staying permanently on what had been its summer time offset.

The decision was controversial. Critics noted that at UTC+3 year-round, Bursa’s winter sunrise in December is delayed until nearly 8:15am, while solar noon arrives around 1pm. The clocks run “fast” relative to the sun throughout winter. Supporters argued that consistent time reduced confusion and that the alignment with Russia, the Middle East, and East Africa simplified international commerce.

The Ottoman first capital

Bursa fell to the Ottoman forces under Orhan I in 1326 and became the empire’s capital until the conquest of Edirne in 1363. The city retains remarkable Ottoman architecture from this founding period: the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami), the covered bazaar, and the Yeşil Mosque and Tomb complex from the early fifteenth century are among the finest examples of early Ottoman architecture.

The silkworm industry that made Bursa wealthy in the Ottoman era still exists in vestigial form. Bursa silk was traded across Europe and Asia, and the covered bazaar, the Koza Han, was dedicated to silk trading. Today Bursa is an automotive manufacturing center: Renault and Fiat have major plants here.

Mount Uludağ

Bursa sits at the base of Mount Uludağ (2,543 meters), Turkey’s main ski resort. The mountain’s snow season runs roughly December through April. At this elevation, the winter light patterns differ from the city below. UTC+3 means ski resorts open in complete darkness at 7:30am in midwinter.

The time difference between Bursa and London is three hours in winter, two in summer when the UK observes BST. Istanbul is on the same clock.
