Cancún runs on America/Cancun: UTC-5, year-round. No daylight saving time. This is an unusual situation within Mexico: most of the country observes Central Time (UTC-6 in winter, UTC-5 in summer), but Cancún and the state of Quintana Roo switched to permanent Eastern Standard Time in 2015.

The switch was explicitly driven by tourism economics. Cancún’s visitors come overwhelmingly from the United States Eastern Seaboard and from Europe. By adopting UTC-5 permanently, Quintana Roo ensured that US Eastern visitors would always be in the same timezone as home from November through March, and only one hour behind from March through November when the US observes EDT. The calculation was commercial: tourists confused by timezone differences stay less effectively aligned with booking services, flights, and home communications.

A resort built from scratch

Cancún barely existed in 1970. A small fishing village sat on the narrow barrier island where the hotel zone now stands. The Mexican government’s tourism development agency (FONATUR) selected the site based on computer modeling of weather patterns, beach quality, and accessibility, and began building the resort infrastructure in 1971. By the 1980s it was Mexico’s fastest-growing city.

The original Maya civilization had deep connections to time. The Maya Long Count calendar, one of the most sophisticated pre-Columbian timekeeping systems, was developed by Maya peoples in this region. The ancient city of Tulum, an hour south of Cancún, includes structures aligned to track celestial events with precision. The modern resort city built on and near this heritage operates on a clock driven entirely by hotel checkout times and flight schedules.

The Chetumal alignment

Chetumal, Quintana Roo’s state capital, also uses America/Cancun: UTC-5 year-round. The whole state made the switch together. Belize City just south uses UTC-6, creating a one-hour difference across the Mexico-Belize border.

The time conversion from Cancún to London puts London five hours ahead in winter.
