Epsom is a market town in Surrey, about 15 miles south of central London, following Europe/London: UTC+0 in winter, UTC+1 during BST. The town has a population of roughly 35,000, but for one weekend each June it becomes the center of British flat racing. Epsom Downs, the racecourse that sits on a chalk ridge above the town, hosts The Derby, the most famous horse race in the world after perhaps only the Kentucky Derby, which took its name from the English original.

The United Kingdom operates on BST during Derby weekend, giving Epsom long June afternoons with sunset past 9pm. The Derby itself goes off at approximately 4:30pm BST, timed for peak television audiences and for the light that makes Epsom Downs, with its panoramic views across Surrey, one of the most visually striking racecourses anywhere.

the most democratic racecourse

Epsom Downs is unusual among major racecourses because the downland in the center of the course is common land, open to the public. On Derby Day, tens of thousands of people watch from the hill for free, bringing picnics and setting up on the grass with views of the track. This tradition, which dates back centuries, makes the Derby the most socially mixed event in British racing. The grandstands hold paying spectators in varying levels of formality, while the hill hosts everyone from families with sandwiches to groups with elaborate temporary bars.

The Oaks, the fillies’ equivalent of the Derby, is run the day before on the same course. Together with the Coronation Cup and other races, the two days constitute one of the most important fixtures in the European flat racing calendar.

the camber and the course

Epsom’s track layout is unique and has no equivalent anywhere in world racing. The course runs left-handed in a rough horseshoe shape. Horses start on the far side, climb steadily uphill for the first half mile, sweep around Tattenham Corner on a pronounced downhill camber, and then race the final straight, which also runs slightly downhill toward the finish. The combination of gradients, camber, and the sweeping left turn at speed makes the Derby one of the most demanding tests in flat racing. Horses that lack balance or stamina are found out here.

This topography is why the Derby is considered the ultimate championship race. Speed alone is not enough. A Derby winner needs stamina, balance, temperament, and the ability to handle a course that has no parallel in training.

epsom beyond the races

Epsom’s other claim to fame is Epsom salts, a magnesium sulfate compound discovered in the town’s natural springs in the early 17th century. The connection between the spa town and the racecourse is not coincidental: wealthy visitors who came to take the waters in the 17th and 18th centuries needed entertainment, and horse racing on the nearby downs provided it. The Derby was first run in 1780, and the race has been held at Epsom in all but a handful of years since, including a wartime relocation to Newmarket.

The town today is a London commuter settlement, with trains to London Waterloo taking about 35 minutes. The racecourse operates on only a few race days per year, and the downs are otherwise used as public parkland, giving Epsom an odd temporal rhythm: 360 quiet days and five electric ones.
