Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and the largest city in Atlantic Canada. It runs on Atlantic Standard Time, UTC-4 in winter and Atlantic Daylight Time, UTC-3, from mid-March to early November.

At UTC-3 in summer, Halifax is only 3 hours behind London. This is notably closer to European time than Toronto or New York, and Halifax’s historical ties to Britain made the alignment feel natural to the people who drew these timezone lines.

The Halifax timezone edge

Halifax sits near the easternmost edge of the North American mainland timezone system. Newfoundland is even further east, using its own 30-minute offset: UTC-3:30 in winter and UTC-2:30 in summer, one of the world’s few non-integer timezone offsets that remains in use.

The Atlantic timezone covers Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and the eastern portions of Quebec and Nunavut. This puts Halifax an hour ahead of Montreal and Boston in terms of civil time.

The explosion that set the world’s clocks checking

On December 6, 1917, the Halifax Explosion occurred when two ships collided in the harbor, one carrying munitions. The blast was the largest human-made explosion before the atomic bomb. The disaster generated one of the first mass exercises in coordinating time across the telegraph network: relief supplies, medical teams, and news reports all required precise timing coordination.
