A city that rebuilt itself

Hargeysa was largely destroyed in 1988 during the Somali government’s brutal suppression of the Somali National Movement. A monument in the city center, a MiG jet mounted on a plinth, marks the airstrike. The city was rebuilt almost entirely from scratch after 1991.

That rebuilding included establishing consistent civil administration, including clocks, schedules, and business hours that function independently of Mogadishu’s chaos to the south.

Pastoral and urban time

Somaliland’s economy mixes urban commerce with the livestock trade. Camels, sheep, and goats are exported through the port of Berbera. The livestock trade follows a seasonal calendar tied to rain patterns and grazing conditions, a time system older than any civil timezone.
