Isfahan is one of the world’s most architecturally significant cities, the former Safavid capital and home to Naqsh-e Jahan Square, one of the largest public squares on Earth. It runs on Iran Standard Time, UTC+3:30 in winter, shifting to UTC+4:30 in summer under Iran’s daylight saving.

Iran’s half-hour offset is one of the world’s most prominent. It reflects the country’s geographic position and political independence: rather than adopting the round-hour UTC+3 of neighboring Saudi Arabia or the UTC+4 of the UAE, Iran set its own standard based on the meridian through Tehran.

The Safavid city and Isfahan time

Iran uses the Solar Hijri (Shamsi) calendar. The Persian New Year, Nowruz, falls on the spring equinox, March 20 or 21 in Gregorian terms. This astronomical precision, tying the new year to an observable celestial event, reflects a long tradition of solar timekeeping in Persian culture.
