Izhevsk is the capital of the Udmurt Republic in Russia’s Volga-Ural region. It runs on Samara Time, UTC+4, year-round. Russia abolished daylight saving in 2014.

At UTC+4, Izhevsk is 1 hour ahead of Moscow. This is unusual: most of European Russia uses Moscow Time (UTC+3). Udmurtia switched from UTC+4 to UTC+3 in 2014 when Russia restructured its timezone system, then switched back to UTC+4 in 2016 after public complaints that Moscow time made mornings unbearably dark. The Udmurt Republic explicitly chose to diverge from Moscow.

The Kalashnikov and industrial time

Izhevsk is the city where Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the AK-47, the assault rifle that became the most produced firearm in human history. The Izhmash factory (now Kalashnikov Concern) and related defense industries have dominated the city’s economy since the eighteenth century, when it was established as an iron-working center by the Russian Empire.

Industrial defense production runs on precise schedules. Shift changes, production quotas, and supply chain timing are tightly managed. The defense industry’s discipline shaped Izhevsk’s relationship with the clock.

Udmurt culture and the traditional calendar

The Udmurt people have their own language (related to Finnish and Estonian) and traditional calendar tied to agricultural and ceremonial cycles. The Gerbер (harvest festival) and Vой (spring festival) mark time by seasonal transitions rather than civil dates.
