Before the RMS St Helena, the supply ship that serviced the island for decades, the only way to reach Jamestown was by sea, a journey of several days from the nearest mainland. The island opened its first airport in 2016, though the strong winds make landings challenging.
This isolation shaped Jamestown’s relationship with time. The island knew the date from ship arrivals. News traveled weeks behind events. The idea of synchronizing with the outside world was aspirational rather than immediate.
