Jeddah is Saudi Arabia’s second city and the kingdom’s major port on the Red Sea. It runs on Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, year-round. Saudi Arabia does not observe daylight saving.

Jeddah is the entry point for pilgrims traveling to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities in Islam. Millions of people from dozens of countries arrive each year for Hajj and Umrah, bringing every timezone on Earth into the city’s airports and hotels.

The Hajj and the Islamic calendar

Hajj, the Islamic pilgrimage, is one of the five pillars of Islam and one of the largest annual human gatherings on Earth. Its dates are set by the Islamic lunar calendar, which moves roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. This means Hajj falls in different seasons over a roughly 33-year cycle.

The pilgrimage has its own precise temporal structure: each day and hour has specific rites to perform at specific locations. The Wuquf at Arafat on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah is the spiritual core, timed to sunset. These ritual times, calculated from the Islamic calendar and solar observation, run independently of UTC+3.

Global commerce and the Jeddah Islamic Port

The Islamic Port of Jeddah is one of the largest in the Middle East. Container shipping, tanker traffic, and pilgrimage infrastructure all operate on different time systems: port schedules on UTC, shipping lanes on 24-hour operational time, pilgrimage logistics on the Islamic calendar.
