Kabul is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan, sitting in a mountain valley at about 1,800 meters above sea level. It runs on Afghanistan Time, UTC+4:30, year-round. No daylight saving.

UTC+4:30 is one of the world’s relatively rare non-integer timezone offsets. Afghanistan has maintained this half-hour offset through multiple governments, from the monarchy through the Soviet period, the civil war, the Taliban, the US-backed republic, and the current Taliban administration. The clock has not changed with the politics.

The Silk Road crossroads

Kabul has been a crossroads of the Asian world for over three thousand years. Trade routes connecting South Asia, Central Asia, China, and the Middle East passed through or near the city. The city’s position made it a meeting point of different calendar systems: the Persian Solar Hijri, the Islamic Lunar Hijri, and later the Gregorian calendar all have roles in Afghan civic life.

The bazaars of the old city have operated on market time since antiquity: when traders arrive and when goods are available, not by any clock.

The Persian calendar in daily life

Afghanistan officially uses the Solar Hijri calendar for civil purposes. The year 1404 SH corresponds to March 2025 to March 2026 in Gregorian terms. Government documents, official announcements, and civil records use Solar Hijri dates. This means that two adjacent countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, separated by only the Durand Line, use different primary calendars.
