Kakamega is the capital of Western Province in Kenya, near the border with Uganda and close to Lake Victoria. It runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3, year-round, the same as Nairobi and all of Kenya. No daylight saving.

At 0.3 degrees North latitude, Kakamega is nearly at the equator. Day length is essentially constant year-round: about 12 hours of daylight every day. Solar noon falls at around 12:05pm, a near-perfect alignment with UTC+3.

Kakamega Forest

Kakamega Forest is the only remaining tropical rainforest in Kenya, a fragment of the great Congo Basin forest ecosystem that once covered much of equatorial Africa. The forest’s biodiversity, including rare bird species and primates found nowhere else in East Africa, draws researchers and ecotourism visitors.

The forest also has its own seasonal time signals. Bird calls change with the season. Fruiting trees attract animals in predictable cycles. The local Luhya people have traditional knowledge of these natural calendars that predates any civil timezone.

The Luhya market calendar

The Luhya people of western Kenya traditionally organized economic life around market cycles. Different villages held weekly markets on rotating days, creating a regional market calendar that structured the week. These markets continue today, and the market schedule still organizes movement and commerce in the region.
