Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda, spread across several hills on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. It runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3, year-round, the same as Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Addis Ababa. No daylight saving.

At exactly 0.3 degrees North latitude, Kampala is essentially on the equator. Day length is constant year-round: about 12 hours every day. Solar noon at UTC+3 falls around 12:05pm, a near-perfect alignment.

The source of the Nile and the seasonal calendar

The White Nile exits Lake Victoria at Jinja, about 80 kilometers east of Kampala. The lake’s water levels fluctuate with the rainy seasons, which come twice a year in Uganda (March-May and October-November). Fishing communities on the lake work with these seasonal patterns, which structure the year independently of any civil calendar.

The Baganda Kingdom, centered around Kampala (Mengo Hill was the seat of the Kabaka), had its own traditional calendar tied to agricultural and ceremonial cycles. The Kiganda calendar continues to mark important dates even within the modern civil system.

The boda-boda and the informal clock

Kampala’s millions of boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) riders operate on a continuous informal schedule. No booking system, no timetable: riders are available whenever a passenger needs them. This availability-based timing, responsive to demand rather than the clock, characterizes much of Kampala’s informal economy.
