Kiritimati is the furthest-ahead inhabited place on earth. It uses UTC+14, a timezone so extreme that it doesn’t correspond to any natural solar position. At this offset, noon by the clock arrives with the sun already descending toward the west. The island exists in tomorrow relative to UTC.

This timezone was a deliberate political decision. Kiribati spans across the International Date Line, and in 1995 the government moved its eastern islands, including Kiritimati, from UTC-10 to UTC+14. The reason was economic: it unified the entire country under a single date, allowing businesses and government to operate on one calendar day rather than having the date line bisect their territory.

The consequence was immediate fame. Kiritimati became the first inhabited place to enter the year 2000, on January 1 at midnight local time, more than 24 hours before the last timezone would. Celebrations were held on the island with global media attention. The timezone change bought Kiribati a small but real piece of millennial symbolism.

Kiritimati (pronounced “Kirismas,” following Gilbertese phonology where “ti” sounds like “s”) is a coral atoll, one of the largest in the world by land area. The population is a few thousand, spread across small settlements on an island that is mostly lagoon.

9am in Kiritimati is 7pm the previous day in London, a 14-hour gap that effectively puts the island in a different calendar day from most of the world.
