Kópavogur is a suburb that has grown into Iceland’s second city, directly south of Reykjavik, with the two cities now merging into a continuous urban area. It runs on Atlantic/Reykjavik time: UTC+0, year-round, no daylight saving.

Iceland is one of the most unusual places in the world with respect to solar time. At 64 degrees north, the midsummer sun barely sets (June nights remain bright for most of the night), and the midwinter sun barely rises (December days provide only 4-5 hours of weak light). Iceland chose to stay on UTC+0 permanently in 1968, an hour behind what the sun suggests for its longitude.

The consequence is that in June, Kópavogur operates in effective permanent daylight. The sun sets briefly around midnight and rises again by 3am. People stay up late, children play outdoors at 10pm, and the light refuses to signal that the day should end. In December, it’s the reverse: the 4-hour window of grey light bookended by long, dark periods that the Icelanders navigate with supplemental lighting and indoor culture.

Neither DST adjustment would meaningfully help: advancing the clock in summer would push the already-unusual midnight sunset even later, which nobody wants. Staying on GMT year-round is the pragmatic answer for this particular latitude.
