For Brisbane and the Gold Coast corridor, which trades heavily with Sydney and Melbourne, this creates a one-hour gap in summer that affects business coordination, TV broadcast schedules, and the timing of national sporting events.

The Queensland no-DST position was confirmed in a 1992 referendum, and has been tested in subsequent public debate. The argument for keeping standard time centers on Queensland’s northern latitude: Brisbane at 27 degrees south gets about 14 hours of daylight in summer, and advancing the clock would push sunrise past 6:30am while extending evenings past 8pm. The farmers, who are often cited in this argument, say the early morning heat makes an already-hot start to the day worse if sunrise is delayed by policy.

Logan City, at the southern edge of Queensland, is close enough to the NSW border that some residents live in Queensland but work in New South Wales, waking to one timezone and commuting to another.
