Convert time from Łódź
Łódź is in the Central European Time timezone (CET/UTC+1, CEST/UTC+2 in summer). Poland observes EU daylight saving, shifting clocks on the last Sunday of March and October.
Łódź became one of Europe’s great industrial cities almost overnight in the 19th century, when steam-powered textile mills concentrated here and workers flooded in from across Central Europe. By 1900 it was larger than Warsaw, a dense industrial city of factories, workers’ housing, and merchant palaces built side by side. The 19th-century entrepreneur Izrael Poznański built a mill complex that is now one of Europe’s most successful shopping and cultural centers, Manufaktura.
Poland follows Central European Time, UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer (CEST), with EU standard daylight saving transitions. Łódź sits at 51.7 degrees north, roughly the same latitude as London, giving it similar seasonal light variation. Summer days approach 16.5 hours of light; December days shorten to under 8.
The city was devastated in World War II. Its large Jewish community, once 30% of the population, was annihilated in the Łódź Ghetto. The physical traces are still visible in the former ghetto district. The city has not entirely recovered its prewar population.
film school, design district, and creative rebirth
The creative economy pivot has been real: the Łódź Film School has produced directors including Roman Polański and Krzysztof Kieślowski. The city now styles itself as a design and creative hub, with the old factory district as its showpiece. The working day in the design studios and film school runs on its own schedule.
