Shengavit is in the Asia/Yerevan timezone (AMT/UTC+4), with no daylight saving time observed. Shengavit is one of the twelve administrative districts of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. It takes its name from the Shengavit archaeological site, one of the most significant Bronze Age settlements in the southern Caucasus, dating back roughly 5,000 years. The ancient city and the modern district share a name but operate on very different temporal scales.

Armenia runs on Armenia Time (UTC+4) all year. Armenia observed daylight saving time until 2011, when it was abolished. The decision was made partly to align Armenia with Russia’s decision to stop observing DST, and partly to eliminate the twice-yearly disruption to a population that had expressed consistent dissatisfaction with the changes.

At 40 degrees north, Yerevan and its districts have real seasonal light variation: about 14.5 hours of daylight in June and about 9.5 hours in December. The elimination of DST means that winter mornings in Shengavit are darker than they would be under the old system, but the clock stays fixed.

Mount Ararat and the Armenian year

The Ararat plain that Yerevan overlooks to the south, and the peak of Mount Ararat itself (visible from the city on clear days despite being in Turkey), provide the defining temporal landmark of the Armenian year: the first days when Ararat’s snow cap becomes visible in autumn, the last sightings before summer haze obscures it.

Sumqayıt in neighboring Azerbaijan keeps the same UTC+4 offset on a different political clock.
