Split is built inside, around, and on top of Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman emperor’s retirement complex constructed around 300 AD. People have lived continuously within the palace walls for over 1,700 years. The city keeps Central European Time (UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 in summer), following EU daylight saving rules as a member state of Croatia.

At 43 degrees north on the Dalmatian coast, Split has real seasonal light variation. Summer evenings run well past 9pm, and the marble limestone of the old city reflects the light back even after the sun has set. The Riva, the waterfront promenade, stays busy until midnight in July. Winter is quieter and earlier: sunset before 5pm, the city retreating indoors.

tourism season and the Dalmatian clock

The seasonal contrast is also economic. Dalmatian tourism runs almost entirely from June through September. Split’s clock in July is full of arrivals, ferries to the islands, and cafΓ© tables that fill at 8pm and empty at 2am. In January, the same clock marks a city that largely belongs to its residents.

Diocletian, whose palace defines the city, abdicated the Roman Empire in 305 AD, the only emperor to do so voluntarily. He retired to Spalatum, tended his cabbages, and refused to return to power. The city has carried his retirement into the twenty-first century.

Zagreb to the north and Sarajevo to the east share the same Central European clock.

9am in Split is 8am in London in winter, 7am during British Summer Time.
