the Date Line and DST controversy
Fiji adopted the UTC+12 standard time in 1915 when standardized time was being introduced across Pacific territories. The International Date Line, which runs roughly along the 180-degree meridian, was bent eastward to keep Fiji and its island groups on the same calendar day. Without that adjustment, the eastern and western parts of Fiji would be on different calendar dates.
DST in Fiji was introduced in 1998 primarily to extend usable daylight into the evening during the main tourism season. The adjustment is controversial because Fiji’s latitude (about 18 degrees south) means seasonal daylight variation is real but not extreme: roughly 13 hours in December versus about 11 in June.
