Syowa Station is Japan’s Antarctic research base, operated by the National Institute of Polar Research on East Ongul Island in Queen Maud Land. It keeps UTC+3 year-round, roughly corresponding to the local solar time of its geographic position.

Antarctica has no resident civilian population and no political authority requiring timezone conformity. Research stations choose their offsets pragmatically, often aligning with their home country’s nearest timezone or the timezone of their resupply port. Syowa uses UTC+3, which approximately corresponds to the longitudes of East Africa.

At about 69 degrees south, Syowa experiences the full extremes of Antarctic light. From late April to mid-August, the sun does not rise above the horizon at all: polar night. From late November to early February, the sun does not set: midnight sun. The station keeps its UTC+3 clock through both extremes, creating a complete disconnect between clock time and solar reality during the solstice periods.

The approximately thirty researchers who overwinter at Syowa each year maintain the station’s equipment, conduct atmospheric, biological, and glaciological research, and live on a schedule that follows the institutional clock rather than any solar cue. Meals, work shifts, and communication windows with Japan (at UTC+9, six hours ahead of Syowa) define the station’s day.
