Tadjoura is one of the oldest towns in Djibouti, sitting on the northern shore of the Gulf of Tadjoura. It faces the capital Djibouti City across roughly 40 kilometers of water. The city runs on East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year, the fixed offset used across Djibouti and much of the Horn of Africa.

Djibouti has not observed daylight saving time. At 11 degrees north, the country sees minimal daylight variation, and the fixed UTC+3 requires no adjustment.

Tadjoura’s age distinguishes it in a region where most infrastructure is relatively recent. The town was a significant port for the Afar people’s trade networks, and its dhow harbor connected the interior of the Horn with the Arabian trade routes. The Hamoudi Mosque is one of the oldest Islamic structures in the country.

Today Tadjoura is quieter than the capital. The ferry connection to Djibouti City crosses the gulf in about an hour, and the town retains a pace that feels distinct from the logistics and military activity that define the capital. The Gulf of Tadjoura itself is notable for whale shark aggregations that draw dive tourism, adding a seasonal pattern to the town’s economy.
