Tolyatti is named after Palmiro Togliatti, the Italian Communist Party leader, a legacy of Soviet-era fraternal naming that gives the city its unusual identity: a Russian industrial town named after an Italian communist, most famous for making Soviet-era Ladas.
The AvtoVAZ factory here, opened in 1970 with help from Fiat, produced the Zhiguli and the Lada series. At its Soviet peak, it was the largest car manufacturing plant on Earth. Tolyatti built its entire identity around the factory: the city was constructed alongside it, and hundreds of thousands of workers lived in purpose-built residential blocks a few kilometers from the assembly lines.
