Troll Station is in the UTC+0 zone in winter, shifting to UTC+2 in summer. The Norwegian Antarctic station follows the same daylight saving schedule as Norway.

Troll is a research station operated by the Norwegian Polar Institute, sitting at 72 degrees south latitude on the Antarctic continent. It is one of the few permanent human presences in the interior of Antarctica, staffed year-round with a small crew.

The timezone arrangement at Troll is genuinely unusual. The station uses UTC+0 during the Antarctic winter (roughly April to September), when it operates with minimal staff and maintains logistics links to Norway’s Tromsø gateway. During the Antarctic summer (roughly October to March), the station switches to UTC+2, matching Norway’s summer time, facilitating coordination with the Norwegian research calendar and the supply flights that arrive from Cape Town.

This creates a DST-like switch in reverse from the northern hemisphere: Troll advances clocks in the southern spring and retires them in the southern autumn. The effect is that the station’s clock change aligns with Norway’s, not with Antarctic seasons.

At 72 degrees south, the station experiences complete polar night in winter (no sun for weeks) and complete polar day in summer (the sun does not set for weeks). The clock’s relationship to natural light is essentially decorative during these extremes. Time here is a coordination tool, not a light indicator.
