Myanmar Time sits at UTC+6:30, a half-hour offset that aligns with almost nothing else. Thailand to the east is UTC+7. Bangladesh and India to the west are UTC+6 and UTC+5:30. Myanmar sits between them at an offset that is both geographically reasonable and practically distinctive.

The half-hour offset has origins in the British colonial period, when Burma (as it was called) was set to a time that roughly corresponded to its longitude around 97 degrees east. Rather than rounding to a whole hour, the offset landed at 6:30. Post-independence Myanmar kept it, and after the military government took power in various forms in the 20th century, there was no political incentive to change.

Yangon (formerly Rangoon) was Myanmar’s capital until 2006, when the military junta moved the capital to the newly built city of Naypyidaw. Yangon remains the country’s largest city, commercial center, and cultural heart. Shwedagon Pagoda, the dominant landmark, is covered in 60 tonnes of gold leaf and orients the city spiritually and physically.
